Room sign-up		Dr. Frans Kuypers: Membrane Biology and Hemoglobinopathies (host: Al Pisano) Senior Scientist, Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) Hemoglobinopathies affect millions of people on this planet. Abnormal hemoglobin results in membrane changes, alterations in cellular characteristics, and a very heterogeneous red cell population that determines the vasculopathy typical for these diseases. Sickle cell anemia was identified as the first molecular disease 60 years ago. While all patients share the same simple point mutation in the globin gene, the clinical presentation between patients varies dramatically and is related to the heterogeneous interactions between blood cell components. This talk will cover current research on membrane lipid alterations, its relation to biomedicine, and will focus on the partnership between the UC Berkeley Department of Mechanical Engineering and Children’s Hospital, Oakland, to provide novel ways to monitor and define characteristics of individual cells in these heterogeneous cell populations. This presentation will serve as an introduction to the December 15th BSAC Seminar by Dr. Won Chul Lee.
