Nanoprinting of MEMS and Electron Devices [BPN394] [BPN658] [BPN693]
The Trillion Sensor Universe (TSU) stands to enable the true potential of the Swarm (TS) and Internet of Things (IoT) - a $10 Trillion market opportunity. As part of defining and enabling the path to TSU, this talk will present an approach to achieve registered, no residual layer, micron and submicron level direct patterning and several early demonstration applications. TSU, TS and IoT combined describe the megatrend for this decade where advanced sensor fusion into an internet architecture will enable a new wave of intelligence. Slow development cycles and cost are key limiters to large segments of this market. While 3D printing, inkjet, gravure and silkscreen technologies compete to address the microscale electronics business with their existing medium to high througput, low resolution processes, the large bulk of integrated electronics from ASICs to NEMS, all nanoscale on costly ceramics today, remain unaddressed. Materials development has already produced the inks and substrates necessary for the formation of many electronic components with many more materials in the pipeline being sold at competitive prices. The tipping point toward direct printable electronics from current top down photolithographic approaches is proposed to occur as printing technologies start to address multi-layer, registered printing with resolutions below 1 micron. Focus on transparent molds and advective technologies to pattern the inks stand as an early step toward accomplishing this goal. Applications to be discussed include high performance nanocomposite capacitors and printed transistors.
