In-Cylinder Flame Ionization Sensor for Combustion Monitoring

A micro flame ionization sensor friendly to existing microfabrication techniques is being developed. The coplanar sensor can be produced in arrays, enabling flame propagation speed to be measured via time-of-flight analysis. The sensor can be used to determine flame speed within internal combustion engines, providing data for live combustion optimization techniques. The sensor can also be adapted into a general low-cost flame position sensor, or used as the sensing element for flame ionization detectors.
