SWEEPER: Fast Optical Phased Array for 10MHz Beamforming

The goal of SWEEPER project is to integrate High Contrast Grating (HCG) mirrors and high-speed (10 Mhz) MEMS actuation in order to provide very high slew-rate, coherent beamforming in a low power, compact and lightweight package. SWEEPER system is an array of dynamically tunable all-pass filter (APF). The optical phase of each array element is adjusted by changing the spacing of a Fabry-Perot cavity using a HCG MEMS piston mirror.This approach allows preshaping of the illumination distribution across the array aperture, so the scanned beam pointing with multiple independence beams can be achieved. In this presentation, current progress in Phase I of SWEEPER project will be introduced in terms of modeling, design and fabrication of 8 by 8 HCG MEMS array.
