On the Possibility of Mechanically-Driven Ferromagnetic Resonance

Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) is widely used in many applications ranging from magnetic material characterization to magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic sensing. Traditional FMR needs both a DC and an radio frequency magnetic field to be applied to satisfy the condition for resonance. The necessity to generate these magnetic field components means that FMR equipments are large, power hungry and cannot be integrated on chip. In this talk, we shall present our recent work on the possibility of eliminating both DC and rf magnetic fields by exploiting magnetostrictive coupling in piezoelectric-ferromagnetic heterostructures. The key physics hinges on the fact that it is possible to generate an 'internal' magnetic field in a certain class of ferromagnets by mechanically straining it in the appropriate manner. The necessary conditions to obtain FMR in such a heterostructure will be described. We shall also discuss the most recent experimental work.
