ANSYS is arguably one the most function-laden FEM (Finite Element Model) packages in existence.  It is used widely in industry for this reason.  It can probably do just about anything you want.  With this functionality, however, comes a price: it is extremely complicated to use.  If you want to do simple models (linear models with simple geometry), I suggest you turn to COSMOS or another FEM package.

It can:

Import IGES and other standard CAD geometry format (including those created by SolidWorks).
Automatically create a mesh.
Import meshes from programs such as IDEAS.
Perform linear, non-linear, static, dynamic, etc. analyses.
Perform mechanical, electrical, thermal, fluidic, electromagnetic, and electrostatic calculations & interactions.

Installation

  1. Install ANSYS 5.7 (the disks are available in 1167 Etcheverry or in Prof. Dennis K. Lieu's lab on the 2nd floor of Etcheverry).
  2. During installation:
Install ONLY the program (NOT the license server)
    License Server: dlserve2.me.berkeley.edu
    Use the default port number
  3. To start using, click: Start > Programs > ANSYS 5.7 > INTERACTIVE
