Research Overview:

Schlieren Optics for Mini Chamber: To visualize the flow field within the combustion chamber, schlieren systems are set up on a movable optical table as shown in the lefts hand side figure. The system consists of Xenon light source, collimating mirror, flat mirror, beam splitter, slide for colorization and high-speed camera.  Using the high-speed camera, pictures can be taken at up to 2,000 frames per second with exposure time of 23 microseconds.  Pictures are stored in TIFF format and downloaded to the local hard drive.  One of the preliminary test results is shown in the right hand side of the Figure.

A mini combustion chamber for schlieren visualization has been designed and assembled.  Our primary goal is to take pictures with high-speed camera to measure the propagation speed of flame inside the mini chamber, followed by visualization of ignition and combustion process in a mini engine.
