Norman Tien received the B.S. degree from the University of California, Berkeley, the M.S. degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and the Ph.D. degree in from the University of California, San Diego. He is Professor and until October of 2005, was Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California at Davis. He has a joint appointment as Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, at the University of California, Berkeley, and is also a Co-Director of the Berkeley Sensor & Actuator Center (BSAC). He was on the faculty at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, from 1996 to 2000, where he became an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Tien is an Editor of the IEEE/ASME JOURNAL OF MICROELECTROMECHANICAL SYSTEMS and an NSF CAREER award recipient. His research interest are in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), processes, and devices particularly for application in information technology. Prof. Tien has recently accepted a position as Department Chair, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Nord Professor of Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland Ohio.
