Toward MEMS Ionocraft
The relevant background and theoretical basis for an electrohydrodynamic thruster (i.e. an ionocraft) is presented. Feasibility for use in the field of mobile wireless sensor networks is explored, with emphasis on potential energy efficiency, ease of production, and high degrees of autonomy. The theory is used as a foundation towards a better-engineered design that seeks to conclusively establish this propulsion mechanism as viable for MAV (micro air vehicles). Furthermore, macro-scale, non-autonomous prototypes will be supported by the first experimental steps towards a MEMS ionocraft.
